The layers under and around a roof covering that actually stop water, from membranes and flashing to low-slope details, built into Cottontown porch roofs, additions and reroofs by JACCO as the general contractor.
Shingles shed water; the details stop it
A roof covering is designed to shed water running downhill across it. It is not designed to stop water pushed sideways by wind, backed up behind debris or left standing on a shallow slope. That job belongs to what sits underneath and around it: the underlayment, self-adhering membrane in valleys and along eaves, step flashing and counterflashing where roofs meet walls, kick-out flashing that turns water away from siding, and properly lapped seams on any low-slope section.
Low-slope roofs are where waterproofing matters most. A porch roof added to a farmhouse often has to stay shallow to fit beneath second-story windows, and a pitch that low cannot carry ordinary shingles reliably. It needs a membrane system or a covering rated for the slope, with the transition to the steeper main roof detailed so water cannot work back underneath. On older Cottontown homes that have grown over time, joints like that are a frequent source of trouble.
JACCO builds these details into work we are already doing, whether that is a new addition, a porch roof or a full reroof, and performs or coordinates targeted waterproofing where one transition keeps letting water in. Our roof waterproofing page explains each component in more depth, and our roof leak repair page covers tracing a leak that is already active and fixing the damage it caused.
Where the waterproofing goes on a Cottontown roof
- Self-adhering membrane in valleys and at eaves
- Step flashing and counterflashing at sidewalls
- Kick-out flashing to steer water off sidewalls
- Membrane systems for low-slope porch roofs
- Sealed transitions between shallow and steep sections
- Pipe, vent and skylight penetrations flashed
Porch roofs and additions on older farmhouses
Around Cottontown, a farmhouse that has grown over the years can carry more roof transitions than its size suggests: a wraparound or side porch, a mudroom addition, a carport roof joined to the house. Each joint is a place for water to get in, and each is worth detailing properly while the roof is open anyway. Waterproofing done as part of an addition falls under that project’s permit through Sumner County; for stand-alone work on an existing roof, JACCO confirms during the bid whether anything is required.

What is the difference between roof waterproofing and roof repair?
Repair responds to a leak that has already happened; waterproofing is the set of details that keeps leaks from starting. In practice they overlap. When we repair a leak at a porch-to-wall joint, the fix usually is better waterproofing, such as new step flashing, counterflashing and membrane. When we build a new roof, those same details go in from the start, so the vulnerable joints are protected before the first storm.
Can shingles go on a low-slope porch roof?
Only down to a point. Asphalt shingles need a minimum pitch to shed water reliably, and below it they tend to leak when wind drives rain uphill or debris slows the runoff. Shallow porch roofs typically call for a membrane or a roofing material made for low slopes. We check the pitch when we visit and recommend a covering that suits it, rather than forcing shingles onto a roof too flat for them.
