A gutter’s real job happens at the bottom of the downspout

Gutters collect water; downspouts decide where it ends up. A correctly sized gutter with a steady slope toward its outlets moves roof runoff off the house, but if the downspout empties against the foundation, the system has only relocated the problem. Water pooling there finds its way into crawlspaces and basements, softens the soil around footings and splashes back onto siding. Good planning starts at ground level: where can each downspout discharge, and how far does the water need to travel?

On sloped Cottontown lots, the answer depends on which way the ground falls. Downspouts on the uphill side may need underground drain lines carried around the house to daylight downhill, while the downhill side can often discharge onto splash blocks or extensions. Rural properties add two more rules: keep concentrated roof water away from the wellhead, and never send it across the septic drain field, which needs its soil to absorb household wastewater, not storm runoff.

JACCO treats gutters as part of the exterior work around them. Rotted fascia and soffit boards are replaced before new gutters are hung, hangers are fastened into solid framing, and corners and outlets are placed where the roof actually concentrates water. Guards can be worthwhile under heavy tree cover. Our gutter and downspout services page has more on sizing, materials and guards.

Slopes, drain fields and outbuildings

Cottontown is JACCO’s home community, and the layout of a rural lot shapes gutter work as much as the gutters themselves. A detached garage or barn uphill from the house can send its runoff straight toward the foundation unless its downspouts are directed elsewhere, and long runs sometimes cross a driveway or yard where a buried line works better than an extension. Replacing gutters does not usually require a Sumner County permit; if the drainage plan grows into regrading or a retaining wall, we confirm the requirements during the bid.

More remodeling FAQs

Why do our gutters overflow even when they are not clogged?

Usually because they are undersized for the roof, pitched the wrong way or short on downspouts. A large or steep roof section can deliver more water in a heavy storm than a standard gutter can carry, especially at inside corners where two roof planes empty into one spot. The fix may be a larger gutter profile, an added downspout or both. We measure roof area and look at outlet placement before recommending anything.

Where should downspouts drain on a property with a septic system?

Away from the drain field, the septic tank and the wellhead, and toward a part of the lot that slopes away from the house. Roof runoff sent across a drain field can saturate the soil the system depends on. On many lots that means carrying the water farther in an underground line, which we map on site once we know where the septic components and the well sit.
