Gutters · Additions, porches and drainageGutters and Downspouts that send water somewhere useful

A gutter is only as good as where its water ends up. JACCO installs and replaces gutters and downspouts on additions, porches and repaired rooflines, sized for the roof and discharged away from the house.

Where your roof water lands matters more than the gutter

Every inch of rain that falls on a roof has to go somewhere. Gutters collect it, but downspouts decide where it lands, and that is where most drainage problems begin: a downspout emptying beside the foundation, a porch roof draining onto a walkway, a splash block that sends water back toward a crawl space. Planning gutters well means thinking about the ground as much as the roof.

On the larger and often sloped lots around Sumner County, long roof runs can move a surprising amount of water in a storm. New additions and porches add roof area the existing gutters were never sized for. When JACCO builds or repairs a roofline, gutters are part of the design: sized to the roof area, pitched toward downspouts placed where water can be carried off, and connected to extensions or drain lines that keep it clear of the house.

Gutters also hide problems. Overflowing gutters soak fascia boards and rafter tails, and it is common to find rot behind an old gutter once it comes down. Replacing that fascia, soffit and trim before the new gutter goes up is carpentry JACCO handles directly. If water has already damaged your siding or trim, our home repair and siding work can address it in the same project.

What’s included

What a gutter project can include

Gutter work usually comes with an addition, a porch or an exterior repair, and it tends to include some of the following.

  • New gutters on additions and porch roofs
  • Replacement gutters and downspouts
  • Fascia and soffit repairs behind gutters
  • Downspout placement and extensions
  • Buried drain lines carrying water away
  • Gutters sized for added roof area
  • Water rerouted off walkways and patios
  • Gutter transitions at roof tie-ins
Why JACCO

Gutters planned with the roof, not after it

Sized to the roof they serve

A deep porch roof or a long addition roofline can overwhelm a standard gutter in a hard Middle Tennessee rain. We look at roof area and pitch, then choose the gutter size and number of downspouts to match rather than copying what is already on the house.

Discharge planned with the grade

Downspouts go where the ground can carry water away, with extensions or buried lines where needed. On a sloped lot, that may mean directing water around a patio or away from a lower-level door instead of toward it.

Wood repaired before it is hidden

When old gutters come down, the fascia and rafter tails behind them are checked. Soft wood is replaced and primed before the new gutters go up, so the new system is not fastened to boards that are already failing.

More remodeling FAQs

Do I need gutters on a new porch or addition?

In most cases, yes. Without gutters, a roof drops its water along the drip line, which can erode soil, splash dirt onto siding and push water toward the foundation or crawl space. There are exceptions, such as a small porch roof draining onto open ground well away from the house. We look at where the water would land during design and recommend gutters wherever that spot would cause trouble.

Why do my gutters overflow even when they are clean?

Most clean gutters that overflow are too small for the roof above them, sloped away from the outlet, or draining through too few downspouts. A valley can also funnel water into one corner faster than the gutter can carry it. An added downspout, a corrected pitch or a larger gutter on that run usually solves it, and we check the fascia behind for water damage while we are there.

Can you fix the rotted wood behind my gutters?

Yes. Fascia, soffit and rafter-tail repairs are carpentry, which is core JACCO work. The old gutter comes down, damaged wood is cut out and replaced, the new wood is primed and painted, and the gutter is reinstalled or replaced. Repairing the wood without fixing whatever made the gutter overflow only resets the clock, so we look for that cause at the same visit.

Will new gutters fix water in my crawl space?

Sometimes. Roof water released next to the foundation is a common source of crawl space moisture, and moving it away often makes a noticeable difference. Grading, groundwater and plumbing leaks can also be responsible, though. We look at the downspout locations and the slope of the ground around the house, and we will tell you if the problem looks like something gutters alone will not solve.
