Fitting a working kitchen into a small backyard

An outdoor kitchen is a real kitchen with the walls taken away: a cooking appliance that needs clearance from anything combustible, counters that need a solid base, often a sink that needs water and a drain, and outlets and lighting that need weather-rated wiring. On a large suburban lot, there is room to spread those pieces out. On a narrow West Nashville lot, every foot counts, and the layout has to work for cooking, for traffic to the back door and for the people next door.

Placement is the first decision. Grills and smokers need distance from siding, eaves and fences, and smoke should drift away from both your windows and your neighbor’s. Under a porch roof or pergola, ventilation and heat clearance decide what kind of appliance can go where. On a sloped yard, the kitchen may sit on a deck or a built-up patio, which changes the structure underneath it. JACCO works through those trade-offs on site before any design is drawn.

Construction then follows the plan: a framed or masonry base clad to suit the house, countertops rated for outdoor use, gas or electric service run by licensed trades, and lighting for evening cooking. Where privacy is short, a screen wall or slatted panel can make a small yard feel enclosed. Appliance and material options are covered on our outdoor kitchen design and construction page.

Setbacks, neighbors and Metro permits

Infill lots in West Nashville often leave little room between a back patio and the property line, so setbacks and neighbors’ sight lines shape the design as much as the appliances do. Smoke, noise and lighting all carry farther than you might expect when houses sit close together, which is worth weighing before choosing where the grill goes. Gas lines, new circuits and roofed structures generally need permits, which Metro Nashville issues for projects inside the city, and JACCO handles the application and inspections as part of the job.

More remodeling FAQs

Can we put an outdoor kitchen under our covered porch?

Often, yes, but the appliance and the roof have to suit each other. Grills and smokers produce heat and smoke that need clearance from the ceiling and a path out, and manufacturers specify minimum distances for their equipment. An electric grill or a vented cooking area may fit where a large smoker would not. We review your porch height, ceiling material and airflow before recommending an appliance and layout.

Do we need gas service for an outdoor kitchen?

Not necessarily. Many outdoor kitchens run on a propane tank, some on electric appliances, and others on a natural gas line extended from the house where service is available. A permanent gas line needs a licensed installer and usually a permit and inspection. We talk through how you like to cook and what utilities the house already has, then plan the kitchen around the option that fits.
