Patios, walkways, steps, seat walls and fire features for West Nashville yards, designed to make a narrow or sloped lot usable and built on a base that handles the water moving across it.

Hardscape that makes a small or sloped yard usable
Hardscaping is everything built into a yard rather than planted in it: patios, paths, steps, low walls, edging and fire features in stone, pavers or concrete. On a generous lot it is mostly about appearance. On a tight or sloped one, it does real work, turning a strip of patchy lawn into a usable patio, replacing a muddy slope with steps, or carving a level terrace for a table and chairs out of a hillside.
Many West Nashville homes, whether early bungalows and cottages or newer infill houses, sit on lots where the yard is narrow, slopes toward the house, or both. Hardscape on those lots has to be planned around grade and drainage. Adding hard surface increases the water that runs off, so patios are pitched away from the foundation, and walls and steps include drainage behind and beneath them. With a neighbor’s yard close by, runoff cannot simply be pushed next door.
JACCO builds hardscape the way it builds structures, starting below the surface. Excavation, a compacted aggregate base, edge restraint and drainage come first; the stone or pavers you see are the last layer. Fire features get proper clearance from the house, fences and trees. Our hardscaping services page covers materials and design options, and our retaining wall construction page explains walls that hold back real soil.

Grade, runoff and Metro review
Before any stone is set on a West Nashville lot, we look at how water moves across it now: where it enters from uphill neighbors, where it pools against the house, and where it can leave without causing problems next door. That reading of the site shapes the patio’s pitch, the drainage beneath it and whether a wall or steps belong in the plan. Metro Nashville may have requirements for larger hardscape or drainage changes; projects inside Nashville are permitted through Metro, and JACCO handles any applications and inspections the work needs.

Pavers, natural stone or concrete: which is right for our yard?
Each suits a different situation. Pavers tolerate ground movement well and can be lifted and reset if a utility needs access; natural stone suits older homes and gives a more irregular, hand-laid look; concrete makes a continuous surface that can be finished several ways but can crack if the base moves. On a sloped or narrow lot, the base and drainage matter more than the material. We bring samples and talk through how each would look with your house.
Can a fire pit go in a small backyard?
Usually, with planning. A fire pit needs clearance from the house, fences, overhanging trees and anything combustible, and it should sit where smoke will not drift straight into your windows or a neighbor’s. Local fire rules can apply to wood-burning features, so it is worth checking what applies before settling on a design. A gas fire feature is an option where wood smoke would be a problem on a close lot.
