Why the base decides whether pavers stay flat

Pavers fail from the bottom up. When a patio develops dips, rocking units or widening joints, the cause is almost always the base: not dug deep enough, filled with the wrong material, compacted in one thick layer instead of several thin ones, or built without edge restraint to keep the field from creeping outward. The visible pavers are the easy part. The excavation, aggregate and compaction underneath decide whether the surface stays flat through years of rain and seasonal freeze and thaw.

A sound installation follows a consistent sequence. The area is excavated to firm subgrade and graded so the finished surface slopes away from the house. Crushed aggregate is spread in thin lifts, each one run over with a plate compactor until it is firm, followed by a screeded bedding layer and then the pavers themselves. Edge restraint locks the perimeter, and the joints are filled and compacted so the pavers interlock. Each step is simple; skipping any one of them is how patios end up uneven.

West Nashville lots add a few wrinkles. Around older homes, tree roots near the surface can affect excavation depth and will lift pavers later if they are ignored. Infill houses often sit close to the lot line, so runoff has to be managed rather than sent next door, and permeable pavers can be worth considering where drainage is limited. Material, color and pattern options are on our paver installation page.

Getting materials into the backyard

Moving a compactor, aggregate and pallets of pavers into a West Nashville backyard can be the hardest part of the job when the only route is a narrow side yard. We plan access during the site visit, protect lawns and walkways along the path, and stage material so the street and neighbors are not blocked longer than necessary. A ground-level patio often does not need a building permit, but projects inside Nashville answer to Metro Nashville, and JACCO checks whether yours needs anything before work starts.

More remodeling FAQs

How deep does the base for a paver patio need to be?

It depends on the soil, the use and how much water the site sees. A walkway or patio needs less than a surface that carries vehicles, and soft or poorly draining soil calls for more aggregate than firm ground. Rather than quote a single number, we check the subgrade during excavation and build the base to suit, compacting it in thin lifts so it stays firm.

Are permeable pavers worth it on a small lot?

They can be. Permeable pavers have wider joints filled with open-graded stone, and they sit on a deeper base designed to hold water and let it soak into the ground. On a tight lot where runoff has nowhere to go, that can ease drainage problems. They take more excavation and need occasional joint maintenance, so we compare them with a standard paver patio and a drainage plan before you decide.
