Layer by layer: how a lasting paver surface is built

A paver surface is a layered system, and each layer has a job. The soil is excavated to a depth that suits the use, compacted, and sometimes covered with fabric to keep the base from mixing into soft ground. Crushed stone goes down in thin lifts, compacted each time. A screeded bedding layer sets the final height, the pavers go down in pattern, and an edge restraint locks the perimeter. Jointing sand is swept in and the whole surface is compacted again to seat it.

Paver problems almost always start out of sight. A base that is too thin or poorly compacted lets the surface rut and dip. Missing edge restraint lets the pattern creep apart until joints open and weeds move in. Poor slope sends water toward the house or leaves puddles on the patio. None of those can be fixed from the top; they have to be built out from the start, which is why base work takes most of the time on a well-built paver job.

Pattern and color are where the design comes in. Herringbone locks together tightly and suits areas that take more traffic; running bond and ashlar patterns read as calmer and more formal; a contrasting border frames the field and hides cuts. Pavers come in tones that work with red brick, painted brick, stone and siding. Our paver patio and walkway bids name the paver, pattern, base depth and edging, so the finished surface matches what you approved.

Laying pavers on Cottontown ground

On a rural property, paver walkways often run longer than they would in town, linking the drive, the house, a detached garage and a garden, and many cross sloping ground. A steady pitch, steps built from wall block where the grade gets steep, and drainage that moves water off rather than along the path keep them sound. Compaction equipment and pallet deliveries stay clear of the septic system. A paver project at grade seldom involves a permit, though we check with Sumner County whenever walls or steps are part of the plan.

More remodeling FAQs

Can pavers be installed over our existing concrete patio?

Sometimes. If the slab is solid, drains correctly and has no heaving or large cracks, thinner pavers can be set over it on a bedding layer or in mortar. That raises the surface, so door thresholds and steps have to be checked first. If the concrete is cracked, sunken or pitched toward the house, removing it and building a proper base usually gives a better result. We assess the slab during the site visit and recommend the approach that suits it.

Which paver pattern works best on a sloping walkway?

Herringbone is usually the strongest choice. Because each paver interlocks with its neighbors at right angles, the pattern resists the creeping and spreading that slope and foot traffic encourage, and laying it at 45 degrees to the path adds even more resistance. Whatever the pattern, a sloped walk needs solid edge restraint on both sides and, where the grade gets steep, steps rather than a ramp of pavers. We lay out the path during the site visit so pitch and step locations are clear before work begins.
