Base, forms and reinforcement come first

With concrete, nearly every decision that matters is made before the pour. Soft or organic soil is removed, the subgrade is compacted, and a gravel base goes down. Forms are staked at the finished height with enough fall to shed water. Reinforcement goes in, whether rebar, wire or fibers, and interior slabs get a vapor barrier. Control joints are laid out so the inevitable shrinkage cracks fall where they are meant to, and the pour itself is timed around the weather.

Most of our concrete work supports something else. Footings carry decks, porches, additions and garages and are inspected before concrete is placed. Slabs become patio floors, garage and workshop floors, and pads for sheds and equipment. Steps, stoops and walkways tie entrances to the drive. Because JACCO builds what sits on the concrete too, the slab is formed with the next stage in mind: anchor bolts in the right place, thickened edges where walls bear, and slopes that suit the doors.

Finish follows use. A broom finish gives traction on outdoor steps and walks; a smooth trowel finish suits garage and workshop floors that need sweeping; a clean tooled edge makes a patio look deliberate. Curing matters as much as finishing, so new concrete is kept from drying too fast in summer heat and protected from freezing in winter. Our concrete slabs, footings and steps are scoped with the base, reinforcement and finish written out.

Pouring concrete on a Cottontown property

Getting concrete to a rural site takes planning. A loaded ready-mix truck is heavy enough to crack a septic tank lid or crush field lines, so the truck route is marked to avoid them, and long gravel drives are checked for firm footing. Where the truck cannot reach the forms, the concrete is moved by pump or buggy. On sloping ground, footings may need to step down the hill. Structural footings in unincorporated Cottontown are inspected through Sumner County before the pour, which JACCO schedules.

More remodeling FAQs

Is there a good time of year to pour concrete?

Concrete can be poured through most of the year in Middle Tennessee, with adjustments for the season. In summer heat, pours start early in the day and the slab is kept moist so it does not dry too fast and crack. In cold weather, concrete is never placed on frozen ground, and fresh slabs are covered with insulated blankets until they gain strength. Spring rain mostly affects scheduling. We plan each pour around the forecast and let you know if the weather moves the date.

Can you pour a slab for a new workshop or outbuilding?

Yes. A slab for a building is designed differently from a patio: it usually has thickened edges or a separate footing under the walls, reinforcement throughout, a vapor barrier if the space will be enclosed or conditioned, and anchor bolts set to receive the framing. Most structures also need a permit and a footing inspection. We plan the slab and the building together, so the concrete is ready for exactly what will sit on it.
