Staircases, built-ins, trim, porch columns and millwork for older farmhouses and newer homes around Cottontown, measured on site and fitted to the walls, floors and ceilings as they actually are.

Trim, stairs and built-ins fitted to walls that are rarely straight
Custom carpentry is the woodwork people notice when they walk in: staircases with their treads, risers, newels and rails; built-in bookcases, window seats, benches and cabinets; casing, baseboard, crown, wainscoting and shiplap; and on the outside, porch columns, railings, brackets and trim. What makes it custom is fit rather than ornament. Each piece is measured in place, cut for that exact spot and scribed so it meets uneven walls and floors without gaps.
Older farmhouses are where that skill shows most. Original trim often has profiles no store carries, walls lean, and floors slope toward the middle of the house. Matching old casing may mean combining stock moldings into the original shape or having a profile run to match. On porches, rotted columns, railings and brackets can be rebuilt to the original pattern, with turned spindles and cut-out details reproduced so the repair is hard to spot from the yard.
In newer homes, carpentry usually means raising the level of finish. Thin builder casing gives way to heavier trim, a stair gets a stained newel and horizontal metal balusters, and a blank wall becomes a built-in with storage. On rural properties, a mudroom bench with hooks, cubbies and boot storage near the back door earns its keep every day. Our custom carpentry and millwork is planned with you on paper first, then built and installed by hand.

Exterior and interior carpentry in Cottontown
Exterior woodwork works hard on open rural lots, where porches take full sun, wind-driven rain and wide swings in humidity. We choose rot-resistant materials for exposed pieces, prime every face before installation, and cap or flash the tops of columns and rails so water does not sit on end grain. Interior trim is allowed to acclimate before it is cut. Most finish carpentry needs no permit, though structural porch repairs and some stair rebuilds may, and that question is answered with Sumner County before any price is final.
“They arrived when they said they would. I was not surprised by the cost. I was given a reliable estimate.”

Can rotted porch columns be replaced without taking the porch roof down?
Yes, in most cases. We set temporary supports under the beam, remove the damaged column, check the beam and the base it sits on for hidden rot, and install the new column with a ventilated base and a capped top so water drains away. On older farmhouse porches, the beam or floor framing sometimes needs repair as well, which we price before going further. Replacement columns can match the original style, whether square, tapered or turned, so the porch keeps its character.
Can you build a mantel or fireplace surround to suit a farmhouse?
Yes. A mantel can be a single heavy beam of solid or reclaimed wood, a painted surround with paneling and crown, or part of a wall of built-ins flanking the fireplace. We measure the existing firebox and masonry, keep combustible wood at the clearances the code and the fireplace require, and draw the design for your approval before anything is built. The finished piece is scribed to the brick or stone so it sits tight against an irregular face.
