Staircases, railings, wall paneling, mantels and built-ins for Brentwood homes, replacing builder-grade details with millwork measured, scribed and proportioned for the rooms it goes into.

Millwork scaled to the rooms it lives in
Houses built in the 1990s and 2000s often have real volume: a two-story foyer, a family room with a tall ceiling, a stair that climbs to an open balcony. The carpentry rarely kept pace. Stock oak railings, thin casings and short baseboards look undersized against walls that tall, and big flat stretches of drywall leave rooms feeling unfinished. Brentwood also has plenty of houses from the 1970s and 1980s, which often have the opposite issue: lower ceilings and closed rooms where well-chosen trim and built-ins have to do more of the work.
Scale is the first fix. In a tall room, crown molding, casings and baseboards can step up in size, and wall treatments such as wainscoting, board-and-batten or applied panel molding break a two-story wall into proportions that feel deliberate. Staircases change the most: carpet comes off, hardwood treads and painted risers go on, and a new handrail, newels and wood or metal balusters carry up to the balcony so the whole run reads as one design. A mantel and surround sized for the wall gives a tall fireplace the presence it was missing.
Storage is the second. Wire shelving in the closets, a garage entry with nowhere to drop bags and shoes, and a fireplace flanked by empty drywall are all places where built-ins earn their keep. JACCO builds custom carpentry and millwork to fit each wall, scribing cabinets and shelving to surfaces that are never perfectly straight and coping inside trim corners so joints stay tight through the seasons. Painting or staining is coordinated so every piece reaches the punch list finished.

- Built-in closet storage in place of wire shelving
- Mudroom lockers and benches at the garage entry
Railings, permits and trade order in Brentwood
Whether carpentry needs a permit from the City of Brentwood depends on whether it touches the structure. Rebuilding a staircase, changing the guardrail at an open balcony or cutting into framing may require one, with railing height and baluster spacing built to code, while trim and most built-ins are less likely to. We make that call with you during the bid. Because carpentry often sits between flooring and paint, the trades are ordered so new treads, trim and finished walls are not damaged by the work that follows.
“Their quality of workmanship presented a beautiful end result, especially the fireplace surround and custom stair railing.”

Can our carpeted staircase be changed to hardwood?
Usually, yes. Once the carpet is pulled, we check whether the existing treads are finish-grade hardwood or construction-grade boards meant to be covered, which is often the case in houses of this age. New treads and risers are then fitted over the existing structure, cut to each step and stained to match or complement the floors. Replacing the balusters and handrail at the same time gives the stair a completely new character.
Can wire closet shelving be replaced with built-in storage?
Yes. Of all the carpentry upgrades in a house, it may be the most practical. We look at how you use the closet, then design a mix of double and single hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage that is fitted to the walls like cabinetry. Built from paint-grade or stain-grade materials, the result looks like furniture and usually holds far more than the original wire racks. Lighting can be added while the closet is empty.
