Woodwork made for the house it goes into

Custom carpentry is where a house gets its character. A staircase with a solid newel and well-proportioned balusters, a bookcase scribed tight to an uneven wall, casing and baseboard that match from room to room, a porch with turned spindles and brackets that suit the house. None of it comes in a box. It is measured on site, built to fit and installed so the joints stay tight as the seasons change.

Franklin homes ask for very different carpentry. In a historic house near downtown, the work is often matching what is already there: reproducing a trim profile, rebuilding a porch railing or replacing a damaged bracket so the repair disappears. In established subdivisions, homeowners frequently replace builder-grade trim, add built-ins around a fireplace or update a staircase with new treads, a stained handrail and metal balusters. Newer construction often benefits from millwork that gives plain rooms some depth and shadow.

Our custom carpentry spans interior and exterior work: stairs and railings, built-in cabinetry and shelving, mantels and fireplace surrounds, wainscoting, wood ceilings, closet systems and porch millwork. Finish carpentry is scheduled after the dusty trades are done, so the woodwork goes into a clean room, and every piece is part of the punch list walk before closeout. Wood species, stain and paint are chosen alongside the floors and cabinetry around them.

Exterior millwork and historic review

Interior trim and built-ins usually travel with whatever permit the larger remodel needs, if any, but exterior millwork in Franklin’s historic districts deserves a closer look. Replacing porch railings, columns or trim with a different design may need design review, though a like-for-like repair may be handled differently. We find out which path applies before the bid is final. When the carpentry is structural, such as a new staircase or a rebuilt porch, a City of Franklin building permit may apply, and we take care of it.

“Their quality of workmanship presented a beautiful end result, especially the fireplace surround and custom stair railing.”

More remodeling FAQs

Can you match the original trim in our older Franklin home?

In most cases, yes. We take a sample or trace the profile of the existing casing, baseboard or crown, then source a matching profile or have one made. Older homes often have trim built up from several pieces, which we reproduce the same way. Paint or stain then blends the new work with the old so it reads as original.

Do you build new staircases or only update existing ones?

Both. Staircase work ranges from replacing treads, handrails and balusters on an existing stair to building a new one where the layout changes. Stairs are closely governed by code for rise, run, headroom and railing height, so the design is checked before anything is cut. We can pair stained wood treads and newels with horizontal or vertical metal balusters, or build an all-wood railing to suit the house.
