Replacing laminate, tile and first-generation stone

Countertops date a kitchen faster than almost anything else in it. In houses built from the late 1970s into the 2000s, the original surfaces run from laminate with a rolled front edge to tile with grout lines that never stay clean, cultured marble with molded sinks in the bathrooms, and early granite with a busy pattern, a thick bullnose edge and a short four-inch splash. Replacing them is one of the most visible changes you can make, whether within a full kitchen remodel or on its own over the existing cabinets.

Taking the old tops off is its own piece of work. Tile counters were often set in a mortar bed, early stone was glued down firmly, and a four-inch splash usually tears the drywall paper when it comes away, so wall repair and a new backsplash belong in the plan. In bathrooms, a cultured-marble top gives way to quartz or stone with an undermount sink, which can change the faucet. In kitchens, switching to a slide-in range or adding seating at an island changes the cutouts and the support the stone needs.

Templates are made only after the cabinets are set and level and the sinks, faucets and appliances are chosen, so the cutouts match the real fixtures. You approve where each seam falls before fabrication, and island overhangs get brackets or corbels where seating calls for them. JACCO coordinates the full countertop installation, from tear-out and fabrication to plumbing disconnect and reconnect and the backsplash that finishes the job.

When a Brentwood countertop job grows

A straight countertop swap is mostly a fabrication and installation job, but it often grows: a sink moves to the island, a cooktop becomes a gas range, or an appliance garage needs new outlets. Those changes bring plumbing, gas or electrical work that may need to be permitted through the City of Brentwood, and that is settled in the bid. We also sequence tear-out, templating and installation so the kitchen goes without working counters for as little time as possible, and we plan with you around the days the sink is disconnected.

More remodeling FAQs

What happens to the backsplash when old countertops come out?

Usually it has to change. A four-inch stone or laminate splash is glued to the wall, and removing it typically tears the drywall paper behind it, while an existing tile backsplash will no longer meet the new countertop cleanly. Most homeowners take the opportunity to install new tile or a full-height slab backsplash. We include the wall repair and the backsplash plan in the bid, so the kitchen is never left with a bare stripe of wall.

Can a cultured-marble bathroom vanity top be replaced on its own?

Yes, as long as the vanity cabinet is in good shape. The old top and its molded sink come off, and a new quartz or stone top is templated for an undermount or vessel sink and the faucet you choose. Because faucet hole spacing often changes, the plumbing connections are updated at the same time. If the vanity is low or water-damaged, a new cabinet at a more comfortable height may make more sense, and we will say so.
