Doors you notice every time you use them

Doors get used more than any other part of a house, and in homes that have stood since the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s, the originals show it. Interior doors are often hollow-core six-panel slabs, light enough to rattle in their frames and thin enough to let every sound through, with brass hardware worn through its plating. Front doors stick in summer and show daylight at the corners. Sliding patio doors drag on tired rollers and fog between the panes. Each is fixable, but the fix is usually a new door rather than another adjustment.

Replacing interior doors as a set is one of the more noticeable changes you can make without opening a wall. Solid-core doors in a five-panel, shaker or flat style feel substantial, quiet the space between bedrooms and bathrooms, and pair naturally with wider casings and hinges and levers in one finish throughout. Depending on the condition of the frames, the new doors are either fitted to existing jambs or installed as pre-hung units, and paint is coordinated so every door arrives at the punch list finished rather than just hung.

Exterior doors are where installation matters most. When an entry, patio or garage door comes out, we check the sill and the framing below it, because water that slips past a failed threshold rots subfloor and rim joist where no one sees it. The new unit sits on a sloped sill pan, is shimmed plumb and square, insulated around the frame and flashed into the wall. JACCO handles door installation and replacement for every opening in the house, and a door between the garage and the living space is chosen with its fire-separation rules in mind.

Front doors, HOAs and Brentwood permits

Interior door work stays inside the house, so it rarely involves anyone but you and us. An exterior door is more public. A new front door changes how the house meets the street, and in Brentwood neighborhoods with an HOA, its style, color and glass may need architectural approval first. Cutting a new opening or widening one for sidelites means a new header, which usually has to go through the City of Brentwood’s permit process. Both questions are answered in the bid, and approvals are settled before a made-to-order door goes into production.

More remodeling FAQs

Is it worth replacing hollow-core interior doors?

For most homes, yes, if sound and feel matter to you. Solid-core doors are heavier, close with a reassuring weight and cut noise between bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces. Replacing the doors throughout the house at once keeps styles, hardware and trim consistent, and it pairs naturally with new flooring or paint. Whole-house door replacement is priced from a written scope, and the full cost is in front of you before you decide.

Can sidelites or a transom be added to our existing front door?

Usually, yes, but it is a framing job as much as a door job. Sidelites need a wider rough opening, which means removing wall on one or both sides, installing a longer header and patching the siding or brick outside and the drywall and trim inside. A transom needs height above the door that the existing framing may or may not allow. We check the wall during the site visit, and any permit or HOA approval is built into the plan.
