Choosing and laying floors for a working household

Most flooring problems start beneath the surface. Squeaks come from loose subfloor, cracked tile from a floor that flexes, and gapping planks from moisture or a wavy base. So the first part of any installation is the part you never see. We pull up old flooring, screw down loose sheathing, replace soft or water-damaged sections, and grind or fill high and low spots until the floor is flat within the tolerance the new material requires. Tile also gets a backer or membrane suited to the room.

Choosing the material is about the room as much as the look. Porcelain and ceramic tile handle water in bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms. Luxury vinyl plank has a waterproof core and stands up to kids, dogs and basements. Wood brings warmth to living and dining rooms and can be refinished; our hardwood flooring page covers solid and engineered options. We help you choose room by room, and the scope lists the exact products before work starts.

Older farmhouses around Cottontown add their own challenges: layers of sheet flooring over original boards, floors that dip toward the center of the house, and rooms that meet at different heights. Sometimes the fix is from below, sistering a joist through the crawlspace before anything is laid above. Transitions between rooms are planned so thresholds stay low, and baseboards and shoe molding are reinstalled or replaced after the floor is in. Our flooring installation scopes spell out each of those steps.

Crawlspaces, slabs and muddy boots in Cottontown

If your home sits over a crawlspace, what happens down there shows up in the floor above. A missing vapor barrier or poor ventilation can push moisture into the subfloor, which matters most for wood, so we check the crawlspace before recommending a product. Slab-on-grade rooms are tested for moisture before anything is glued or floated over them. On a working rural property, the floor by the back door takes mud and grit daily, which is why tile or vinyl often makes sense there. Flooring on its own rarely needs a permit.

More remodeling FAQs

Which flooring stands up to muddy boots, dogs and grit?

Porcelain tile and luxury vinyl plank are the most forgiving. Tile is extremely hard and shrugs off water and grit; vinyl plank is softer and warmer underfoot, waterproof, and resists scratches better than most wood finishes. Hardwood can work in busy homes with a matte finish and a harder species, though it will show wear over time. A common approach is to mix materials, with tile at the entries and mudroom and wood or vinyl in the living areas.

What happens to baseboards and doors when the new floor sits higher?

They get adjusted as part of the job. Baseboard and shoe molding are removed before the old floor comes up and reinstalled or replaced afterward, so the gap at the wall is covered cleanly. Interior doors are trimmed at the bottom to clear the new surface, and exterior door thresholds are checked so they still seal. Where a thicker floor meets a thinner one, a transition strip or feathered underlayment keeps the step small. We list these details in the scope so nothing is left to chance.
