Several rooms, one plan and the right order

Once a house reaches a certain age, its rooms tend to come due together. The kitchen is dated, the primary bath still has its original tile, the carpet is worn through, and the doors, trim and windows have seen better days. That is a common situation in Brentwood, where many homes date from the 1970s through the 2000s. Tackling it piecemeal over several years means living in a construction zone more than once and opening the same walls twice.

A whole-home remodel treats it as a single project. The plan starts with how the house is used now. A formal living room that sits empty might become a study, a closed kitchen might open to the family room, and a hall bath might borrow a few feet from a linen closet. Finishes are chosen together, so flooring, trim profiles, doors, hardware and paint read as one house instead of a series of separate updates made in different decades.

Sequencing is where a general contractor earns the job. Demolition, framing, mechanical rough-ins and inspections happen while the walls are open; drywall, cabinetry, tile and trim follow in an order that keeps one trade from undoing another’s work. JACCO writes that order into the schedule you see before construction starts, and a whole-home remodel with JACCO keeps one point of contact on the job throughout. Some families move out for the heaviest phase; others live in a finished part of the house while work moves through the rest.

Phasing a whole-house project in Brentwood

A renovation of this size typically involves building and trade permits through the City of Brentwood, with inspections at stages such as rough-in and final. JACCO gathers those into one plan so each inspection lands where it should instead of holding up the crew. If the work also reaches the outside of the house, through new windows, a changed entry or an addition, and your neighborhood has an HOA, its architectural review goes on the calendar early, because approval may be needed before any exterior work can begin.

“The project kept to its schedule over the next couple of months. The people Jonathon employs have terrific work ethics, from being on time to cleaning up at the end of every day.”

More remodeling FAQs

Can a whole-home remodel change the floor plan, or only the finishes?

Both are on the table. Walls can move once we know what they carry, so a closed kitchen can open to the family room, a formal dining room can become an office, or two small bedrooms can become one generous suite. A finish-only remodel keeps the plan and puts the budget into surfaces, cabinetry and lighting instead. We sketch the options with you during planning, and the written scope spells out which walls change and which stay.

Is it better to remodel everything at once or one room at a time?

All at once is usually more efficient, and it disrupts the household once instead of several times. Shared work such as electrical upgrades, flooring transitions and drywall repair happens in a single pass, and the finishes match because they were chosen together. Phasing still makes sense when timing or cash flow calls for it. In that case we plan the phases so early work never has to be torn out to make way for later work.
